For the better part of a week, I have read newspaper articles, tweets, and blog posts and watched untold number of stories about the child abuse scandal at Penn State. It was clear that most people on both the left and the right were outraged by what had taken place and rightly so. Child abuse is something no society can condone and it is something almost all of us abhor.
So where is the same outrage about the Occupy protest and what it has and is causing to be done to children? Consider these reported incidents.
- In Occupy Boston, two heroin dealers were arrested by police. They were living with, and selling their drugs in front of, a 6 year old boy directly behind welcome tent
- In Occupy Glasgow, a 14 yr old girl was raped.
- In Occupy Dallas a man was arrested for allegedly raping a 14 yr old girl
- In Occupy Chicago a man was arrested for possession of child pornography.
- In Occupy LA a man was charged with exposing himself and masturbating in front of a child.
- In Occupy DC, protesters used children as human shields. (see video below)
- In Occupy Dallas, The Child Protection Agency was forced to remove children from their parent protesters in order to protect them from unsafe conditions
And
- In New York, yesterday, OWS protesters in a tremendous show of courage, harassed small children as they were going to school, shouting at them and frightening them for the cause.
These are just the incidents that have been reported so far. The response from Occupy has either been to deny the crimes or deny that those charged have anything to do with Occupy which sounds a lot like Coach Sandusky at Penn State to me. It is to be expected from a protest movement with so little values that it easily forgives its own crimes while accusing others of theirs.
What is more troubling to me, however, is the lack of response from the broader community. I don’t know if it’s a lack of awareness or an unwillingness to face the truth by those who want to believe that Occupy is something noble and good. Perhaps it’s just apathy, I really don’t understand it.
What I do understand is that being outraged over what happened at Penn State and continuing to ignore what is happening to children because of Occupy is both hypocritical and ridiculously dangerous. It is careless indifference that threatens the safety of our children and our communities.
Whether you support the ideas that Occupy brought forth or not, there can be no moral or legal justification for continuing to support a protest group that is so bankrupt of values, it can rationalize away child abuse.
I understand the outrage about Penn State. I will never understand the lack of outrage over what Occupy has allowed to happen to children…theirs and ours.
