Despite its protestations to the contrary, the Occupy movement is not non-violent, it is rabble that is responsible for increased crime and violence in our cities. The cost to our cities totals in the millions of dollars for the vandalism and destruction of both public and private property. But it is the crime taking place within the camps themselves that is even more troubling. Here are just a few examples taken from media sources across North America, including some sanctioned by Occupy itself.
More than a half dozen rapes and sexual assaults have been reported but with pressure from other protesters, many more have gone unreported.
Crimes including illegal drug use, car break-ins, robbery and assault in the area surrounding the Occupy Denver camp increased 18% in just four weeks and included the break-in of an outdoor equipment store where more than 4000 knives were stolen.
In New York, an elderly woman was assaulted and injured by OWS protesters as the protested a dinner meeting, while two elderly women, including one who is 78 years old were injured and one hospitalized by Occupy DC protesters in Washington outside the convention centre.

In San Diego, protesters attacked street vendors and vandalized their carts with graffiti, blood and urine when the vendors stopped providing them with free food. What some protesters refer to as “donations” is nothing more than theft by extortion and the threat of physical violence. Some vendors have even received death threats. Apparently street vendors in San Diego are not considered part of the 99%.
This past weekend, a man walking through Zuccoti Park and who stopped to take pictures of the OWS camp was assaulted by an OWS protester. The owner of a business that borders the same park reported \that she was being threatened and terrorized by OWS protesters after she refused to allow them to continue to use her washrooms. She revoked her permission after protesters did $3000 damage to her facilities.
In Philadelphia a woman was sexually assaulted in the Occupy Philly camp on Saturday night.
In Texas, an Occupy Dallas protester has been arrested for sex with a minor after having sex with a 14-yr old girl in the Occupy camp. In Occupy Glasgow, a fourteen year old girl was raped.
The body count to date in Occupy camps is seven dead, three by shootings and four by illegal drug overdoses.
In San Francisco, an Occupy protester jumped from the middle of an Occupy march on Saturday to slash a police officer with an Xacto razor blade before disappearing back into into the crowd. A second officer was also attacked and injured by a protester during the same "peaceful" march.
In Calgary, police were forced to protect a man dressed as a chicken from the Occupy protesters he was protesting.
In Boston, police removed homeless protesters from the camp who were armed with knives and stashes of illegal drugs.
Last night, a protester in Occupy Portland threw a Molotov cocktail at the Trade Centre resulting in serious injury to a police officer. (and they wonder why police show up fully armed and in protective riot gear)
In Oakland, damage from Occupy encampment and marches totals hundreds of thousands of dollars. In addition, reports of increased car and store break-in within the immediate vicinity of the camp have increased significantly as reported by Oakland police. This mirrors increases in street crime near Occupy camps across North America.
In New York, the city reports the cost is nearing $500,000 while smaller cities across North America are facing the increased cost from vandalism, additional police services and ongoing garbage collection that bring the cost in North America to an estimated $40 million. This cost does not include what it will cost to repair the parks after the Occupy camps are closed.
There are countless more examples and many more which have gone unreported according to anecdotal evidence from former protesters who have left the movement out of disgust or fear. But regardless of the precise number of specific crimes, there is no question that Occupy has evolved into something ugly and dangerous.
It is more violent in some cities, has attracted extremists from both sides of the political spectrum and is a magnet for drug pushers, addicts and petty criminals. To be fair, in some cities, Occupy has tried to co-operate with law enforcement and attempted to protect its membership with measures to try and reduce crime. But as was seen in the video I posted yesterday and posted again below, too many in Occupy put the movement’s reputation ahead of law and order and the safety of their membership.
Occupy lost its legitimacy when it lost control of its protest and it has lost control of it. One only has to read a half hour’s worth of tweets to see that. Occupy has not brought change or even solutions to addressing the issues it originally put on the public agenda. Instead, it has brought vandalism, division and significant increases in crime. Occupy is not the solution to the issues we face in our society. It is another issue with which we must now contend.
The only solution to that issue is to enforce our laws and shut down the Occupy camps. Only then can we repair the damage to our cities and move on to resolving the other issues with which we need to contend.
