The Bear's Most Popular Posts

Maggie's Bear
I haven't been at this blog thing for very long and I am more than a little overwhelmed by how much response I have received in just a few short months. Most of the comments and emails I receive are quite supportive, a few less so but all are welcome. I don't write in order to try and get someone to agree with me, I simply write and if what I write is interesting enough to cause someone to stop and think about what I've written, I'm satisfied.

I was looking back through the blog and tidying it up and realized that some posts seemed to have touched a nerve more than others. Some of my favourites were not necessarily the favourites of the majority of people who dropped by to read my articles. It made me realize that some things are more universal than others (and that sometimes, I'm not as funny as I think I am). It also made me think that it might be worthwhile to publish a post of my readers' top ten favourites.

So, here they are starting with #10

10 - Environmental Opportunism - A look at the hypocrisy of yet another movement that claims to hold the Rosetta Stone to our salvation and who do quite well financially for themselves in the process

9 - In Their Own Words - I had been quite critical of the Occupy Movement and some of it's supporters took the time to respond to what I wrote. I decided to publish those comments in this post and it seemed to attract a lot of notice.

8. Why I Wear The Poppy - This was written for Remembrance Day. Part of this piece was picked up and quoted on CTV, which was an honour but I was more honoured to have known the people I wrote about in this post.

Black Friday shoppers
7. Black Friday - This was my take on the significance of the retail shopping orgy called Black Friday and how it symbolizes something broader in our society.

6. Canada Revenue Agency Sends Santa A Letter - Who hasn't had some issue with income tax at one point or another? In this post, it was Santa's turn as the wheels of bureaucracy came calling.

The Aftermath Of Occupy LA
5. The Squalid Legacy of Occupy Camps - This is a photo essay I published to express my anger at the hypocrisy of a protest movement that had so little self-respect and respect for our communities that it had allowed may of its tent cities to be nothing more than squalid encampments. I let the photos speak for themselves.

4. The Dark Children's Gift - Although only published a short time ago, this post was widely circulated and quickly overtook many others that had been around for awhile. It is an attempt to explain what it is like for a child who is sexually abused.

3. The Truth About Christmas - Some truths are too big to be constrained by one religion or perhaps, even by formal religion. I believe the true meaning and gift of Christmas is one of those universal truths.

2. A Letter To Santa From The Government Of Canada - This was intended to be a parody of some of the things that government might ask Santa Claus for but ended up being something completely different. I guess the Bear has had to much experience dealing with the bureaucracy.

1. Where's The Outrage - There was a lot of anger expressed online about the Penn State child-abuse scandal but almost none about the misuse and abuse of children in some Occupy camps. This contrast both confused and outraged me and I wrote this article in response to that anger. It seems that many were feeling the same thing I was feeling because this was the most-read article I have written.

This blog has become a part of me now and I write every day. I have discovered two things as a result. The first is that writing about something helps me to clarify my own thinking and to consider issues in a less flippant and superficial manner than I sometimes have in the past.

The other thing? The Bear has not been known for an over-abundance of humility in the past but there is something humbling about having so many take the time to read and comment on what you write. My thanks to everyone who came by and read something I wrote and especially to all of those who took the additional time to leave a comment. I appreciate it all, whether they agreed with me or not and I hope that each person who does come by will find something worth reading.

Thank you and Merry Christmas.
